Hannaford Cause Bag Program Announces 2016 Program Results

Through the sale of two specially dedicated bags, the Hannaford Cause Bag program is designed to support local hunger relief organizations as well as nonprofit causes in the areas of health & wellness, education and civic while also helping to eliminate one-time use shopping bags.

Jim Brennan, COO and co-founder of Bags 4 My Cause, reports that in 2016, over $269,107 was raised in nonprofit donations, with front end single-use bags not being used saving Hannaford over $182,406.  Additionally, direct program marketing driven by the chosen nonprofit causes and hunger relief organizations generated free media with an approximate value of $650,000.

And finally, the total economic impact is valued at $1,202,513, with impact per bag sold to the bottom line equaling $2.90.

Brennan credits these results to the community’s support of both bags offered by the Hannaford Cause Bag program.

  • The Fight Hunger bag– When a shopper buys one of these reusable brown and yellow bags, a $.25 donation is generated, which is equal to one meal for someone in need.  The program has funded more than 215,000 meals at local hunger relief organizations in the communities Hannaford serves.
  • The Hannaford Helps bag – When a shopper purchases the blue bag with the Good Karma message, $1 is donated to a local nonprofit cause. The initiative has raised more than $287,406 in donations for 1,688 causes.

Each month, store leadership chooses a new hunger relief organization to align with the Fight Hunger bag and a new nonprofit in the areas of health & wellness, education and civic to align with the Hannaford Helps bag. With nonprofit organizations chosen each month local to the areas where Hannaford serves, supporters and community members visit the store to purchase the bags in support of the causes they care about.

“This kind of customer driven marketing is a unique and successful approach to running a reusable bag program that offers monetary donations to nonprofits, supports the environmental movement in eliminating one-time use bags, helps cut front-end cost to participating grocers and raises awareness of the grocer’s commitment to their communities,” Brennan said.
